As a result of an altercation with Los Angeles police officers earlier this week, Oscar Ovidio Diaz has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer and one count of stealing a motor vehicle.

Diaz, 30, was shot and critically wounded by the LAPD during a struggle with the officers. The Los Angeles County DA’s office said that Diaz assaulted the officers by cutting them with a knife after the officers stopped a car Mr. Diaz allegedly stole.

The incident occurred on Tuesday near the USC campus. Diaz was hospitalized for his injuries, resulting in the postponement of his arraignment.

Prosecutors have stated that Diaz has prior criminal convictions.

The LAPD’s investigation of the incident is ongoing and will be reviewed by additional law enforcement authorities because it involves a police shooting.

If Mr. Diaz is convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
